Who is the protagonist of a murder mystery where the plot plays out only to reveal the lives of the supposed killer and victim? How do you know who is who if your perception of each person keeps changing? What does it all mean? The reader is the protagonist. You find out when you get to the end. It means the journey matters. This is what I thought when I read the screenplay for Gone Girl tonight.
