If you compare it technically or artistically to The Irishman, 1917, Joker or Once Upon A Time, I’d say the latter are superior in what you’re seeing on screen. However, what Parasite does better than all the American and British films up for noms this year is that it is a complete cinematic package, i.e. it has: comedy, drama, social commentary, satire, political commentary, good acting, the best written script, little kooky, little thriller, subtlety, a strong narrative spine, murder.
In essence, it’s a modern Billy Wilder film (who is this Golden Age writer/director that made movies with laughs and cries), so I think that’s why it won.
